Things long overdue

How does one say that they’re back after falling off the face of the earth? Well, I can’t quite say that: a lot has happened over the last several months, including marriage to my very own dreamboat. Taking a hiatus from writing helped me come to grips with a lot of things about my career that had bugged me, and while I felt terrible for not being as present with social media as I once was, it really helped my mental health to take a step back and re-evaluate.

So I suppose the easiest way would be to jump back in feet-first. 2014 was a hard year to describe: I had a handful of releases, all of which I loved, but looking back they didn’t feel true to form for me. “Anything He Wants” and its sequel “Castaway” sometimes felt like the pinnacle of my writing career. Not only were they well-received, I freaking loved how the story evolved. Then, once it was done, I suddenly hit this self-imposed wall that I couldn’t shake.

What if I couldn’t ever write anything like it again, replicate the “success” that made the first one so enjoyable? While I wrestled with those thoughts, I experimented with some different genres and projects, when my gut told me I should stick with what I know my readers enjoyed.

Now, that being said, here I am once again, working on a new story that I’m SUPER excited about! It’s set in the AHW universe, and while I don’t want to give much away, I do have to say I’m having a TON of fun working on this one. While I know a lot of you will be disappointed that it isn’t another AHW book (I haven’t ruled that out, for the record!), it WILL feature both Jeremiah and Lucy in pivotal side roles, as well as give you an outside view of their relationship.

I’m also pleased to mention that I’m (finally, right?!) reinstating my Snippet Saturdays (or Snippet Sundays when I’m being particularly lazy πŸ˜‰ ) for this new story! That will start this weekend officially, but you can see the first small cookie over on Facebook, which was posted up just today. Saturday’s will be different, and I think you’ll really enjoy Cat and Damian’s relationship. πŸ˜€

And can I just say, I’ve missed you guys!!! {{{{{ HUGS }}}}} Many of you have sent me little notes over the last several months just to see if I’m doing well, and you’ll never know how much I truly appreciate it. So this next story is dedicated to you, and I hope when it’s finally published (working now on solidifying a release date) that you’ll enjoy it as much as I have. <3

A New Adult Romance

Author Sara Fawkes had fans clamoring for more with her New York Times bestselling e-serial erotic romance, Anything He Wants. Now, she’s giving readers exactly what they want with her New Adult debut and first full length novel, Breathe into Me, a sexy, deeply emotional romance that brings Fawkes’ signature heat to a highly popular new genre.

How did my life get so broken?

It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker exboyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then she meets Everett, whose presence changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider to her small community, in town for the summer housesitting one of the grand mansions off the Mississippi coast. When he saves her in a bar one night, she’s grateful but wary of his intentions. Lacey doesn’t trust most men in her life, but for reasons Lacey she understand, Everett is completely captivated by her. He’s determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. As she works with him to free herself, Lacey desperately yearns to trust him, to move on and perhaps start fresh.

But what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her about himself was a lie?

Thoughts on Writing: “The End”

It’s so easy to come up with story ideas. The hard part about writing is, quite honestly, finishing.

One of the hardest things I had to learn is that, if I keep flitting from one idea to the next as my whimsy takes me, I’ll never finish anything. I spent umpteen years never finishing a story, too tempted by the shiny new idea that came into my head. I’d come back, I always told myself. I’ll finish it as soon as I exorcise this new idea out of my head, as soon as I’m done with this new project.

Countless stories piled up on my hard drive, on 3.5″ floppy disks (remember those?), in my journals. I’d be so excited by the new shiny that, when the inevitable NEW new idea came along, I’d forget my pledge to move back to the other and instead become seduced by this shiny, beautiful set of characters. This, surely, would be the one, the story that would finally keep my attention long enough to get to those words “The End.”

Yeah. No.

One of the hardest things for me to learn is that writing a story, like any other kind of responsibility in our lives, takes dedication. Writing was always a hobby for me, something fun. But the longer I did it (and considering I started in preschool – seriously, my mother still has those “books”), the longer I went on, the more it rankled that I never saw “The End” at the back of my stories. Part of that was my fault: the story always continued, life went on for my characters. I didn’t understand about character arcs, or plot climaxes, or things like that. Heck, in the beginning, I didn’t even PLOT: I wrote characters living out their interesting lives, and if a baddie did show up it was almost an afterthought. Invariably, however, I’d switch stories at this point.

It took me doing something so far out of my comfort zone that I never thought I’d accomplish: I wrote a short story.

Snippet Saturday: BREATHE INTO ME – New Adult Romance – Chapter 1

I’ve been a fan of what used to be called “Upper YA/Young Adult” for a very long time. When the New Adult genre first emerged, I was all over that puppy, sucking down everything I could get my hands on. Tamara Webster, Colleen Hoover, Jamie McGuire – I ate those books up like nobody’s business.

As a writer, it was only a matter of time before I wrote one myself, and on this Tuesday that story will be published.

I’m SO EXCITED about this release!! I fell in love with Everett and Lacey almost immediately; I wrote the first quarter of the book in record time, even for me. This is a full novel, not a serial like most of my publications. I can’t wait to share it with you, it’s been such a wild and fantastic ride!

But, I’m sure you didn’t come here to hear me wax poetic on writing. “On with the snippets” I’m sure you’re chanting. πŸ˜€ Well, that’s fine by me, how about the full first chapter of BREATHE INTO ME? Continue reading Snippet Saturday: BREATHE INTO ME – New Adult Romance – Chapter 1

2014 – a year in review

It seems that every other post consists of me apologizing about not updating my blog enough, so I’m going to skip that and dive right into the meaty part of the post. (But I really am sorry)

I have several projects in the works for this year, and that is SUPER exciting to me. Through winter and into spring, I’m basically releasing a new story every month, and I hope to keep up that pace as well as my muse will allow. πŸ˜€ For two years now I’ve been defined by the “Anything He Wants” series, and while yes, there is one more story for Lucy/Jeremiah left (AND Lucas, don’t think I forgot him!), I’m also looking to branch out into new territories. I’ve loved New Adult stories since before I knew what that was, and this April I have my very first coming out. I’m also a biker, and the recent surge in motorcycle club romances makes my inner biker chick wanna dance for joy.

How does 2014 break down in the way of releases? Well, let’s see:

Not dead yet… ;)

So it’s no surprise that I’ve been a little quiet the last couple weeks. We had the big release with “Unraveled”/AHW10, and then I went quiet on social media and blogs. Well, I’m here to say that rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated…

Wait, no such rumors? Really? …dang.

I’m currently in the middle of edits for “Breathe Into Me” and the Avon anthology story, both of which are due very soon. We’ve hit that wonderful snag during edits where things kind of go belly-up, I realize I’m a terrible writer, and just want to stick my head in the sand. Or, in this case, that consists of me pulling out my trusty violin and trying to saw some tunes.

Of course, then strings break, pegs break, I have to take a trip to the luthier (violin doctor) to get things repaired, etc. Yup, first world problems, right? Around winter time, when I’m cooped up inside more often, I tend to get a tiny bit stir crazy – already, I can feel it happening.

On a more serious note, my grandmother was rushed to the hospital a couple nights ago. I found out about it yesterday when my mother texted they were coming down early to take care of my grandparents. Despite all the tests, they don’t know yet what’s wrong with her; high blood pressure (over 200), numbness in her arm, fatigue and, well, age. She’s tough, I know this, but in the last few years she’s grown much more frail than I ever remembered.

So yeah. I have a few things weighing on me, but I wanted to apologize for being so darned quiet. Several of you have reached out via Facebook and Twitter, asking if things are alright. You deserve to be answered individually because, seriously, I adore you guys, but it’s hard for me to focus right now. My brain feels scattered in a million different directions, and once again I’m making no progress forward. :/

It’s depressing and a bit disappointing, but you know what? I’m still so thankful that I can do something I love. Even during weeks like this, when I feel like a failure, I’m so incredibly thankful that I’m able to make a living with this writing stuff. It’s not always smooth sailing (*take a deep breath Sara*) but, man, I wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

Ooh, awesome: just got a text from my father saying my grandmother will be released tonight. Still no word on what if anything happened, but she’s out of the hospital!! Another thing to be thankful for this holiday season!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
